How we build a pool deck
Pool decks sit on ground that was recently excavated, so base preparation matters even more than usual. We compact the sub-base thoroughly, keep the slab isolated from the pool shell with expansion material, and set grades so every square foot drains away from the water — with area drains or a channel drain where the yard will not cooperate.
Slabs are reinforced, jointed on a layout that follows the deck shape, and finished with a texture chosen for wet bare feet. Coping tie-ins, steps down to the lawn, equipment pads and future hot tub pads all get planned before the first pour.

Replacing an old pool surround
Old decks fail at the pool edge first: the slab settles, the joint at the coping opens, water gets under everything and winter finishes the job. We saw-cut and remove the old deck carefully around the shell and coping, correct the base and drainage, and pour a new reinforced deck with a proper expansion joint at the pool.
Why it lasts through Pennsylvania winters
Western PA runs through dozens of freeze-thaw cycles every winter. Water works into concrete, freezes, expands, and pops the surface apart — and road salt speeds the whole process up. Our pool decks are built for that reality, not for a mild climate.
That means air-entrained concrete so there is room inside the mix for ice to expand, a compacted stone base that drains instead of holding water, positive slope away from your foundation, and a sealer applied once the slab has cured. Keep it sealed on a regular schedule and use calcium-chloride-free de-icer the first winter, and you get decades of service out of it.
